Kandy's Sacred Temple of the Tooth, houses one of Buddhism's most sacred relics and draws followers of the Buddhist faith from all part of the world. The annual Esala Perahera festival held in August, is when the tooth relic is taken in procession on the back of a caparisoned elephant through the streets of Kandy.
